DOT is based in the Sunshine Coast with a style of music described as electronic pop. Today we have an interview where she discusses her debut single and gives us a look into her world and what’s happening:
What can you tell us about your debut single, “Weekend”?
Weekend was written by myself and produced by my good friend, Jesswah. As with most of my songs, it’s loosely based on something I experienced and then I let my imagination run wild. The video clip was a collab between Rhi from Down The Rabbit Hole Productions here on the coast and my cuz Brendan Woolcott.
What was it like making the film clip?
Was so much fun!! I’d never really done anything like it before and I surprised myself with how much I enjoyed it. I think I was a good mix of awkward and comfortable haha. I’m planning on filming/directing the next one myself – so excited!
How would you describe your sound?
I guess electro pop.. Pop in the sense that I enjoy writing easy listening, commercial music and electro because.. it’s… Electronic! In the past I always wrote on guitar so it’s all pretty new but I love it!
What do you have planned for the single launch?
I was lucky enough to be asked to support a well known Sunshine Coast band ‘The Brains Trust’ for their single launch. It will be the first time I play Weekend live and I’m pumped! I’m planning an East Coast tour later in the year when the EP is released!
How did you get started?
I starting writing music on a keyboard when I was about 10 then moved to guitar. I played in an all girl rock band in High School then did a lot of solo acoustic writing. I’ve met so many amazing people on my musical journey and am really excited for the future.
Where do you get your inspiration?
I’m inspired everyday, by stories my friends tell me and things that happen to me and around me. If I’m lacking inspiration I head down to the beach and spend some time soaking it all in. It’s my happy place.
Tell us about some of your previous collaborations…
I met an emcee, Manix, on the coast about 2 years ago and he introduced me to a huge bunch of awesome hip hop artists from Melbourne. I’ve collabed on a few tracks with him and the guys from Melbourne and loved every minute. Able8, Cash Krzma and myself have a track called ‘Solitary Electric’ which is really different for me but amazing! A bunch of the guys are starting their own record label called ‘Rising Tide Records’. So much talent between them all! More recently I collabed with house artist, Shea, on a track called ‘Complicated’ soon to be released.Can’t wait for it to drop! I love collaborating, it’s something I want to do a lot more of.
What is your fashion style? Do you follow trends or prefer classic pieces?
I love being comfortable… I just love my kicks!! I love black, grey, spots, stripes, street wear. So, i’ll sit on the fence with this question and say a bit of both!
What is the musical scene like in the Sunshine Coast?
It feels like it’s getting bigger and better! I have only been living up here for about 2 years. We have the Big Pineapple Music Festival coming up at the end of the month with Rufus, Hermitude and a ton more awesome acts so that’s pretty amazing as well as Maroochy Music and Visual Arts fest later in the year. I’m working closely with a creative company on the coast called Pineapple Express and we are planning on running some comps to get some unknown bands noticed! Excited to be apart of it.
What is next for Dot?
Always writing and learning but will focus on getting a live show together. I’ve never toured before and it’s something I want to do really well. Finishing off the EP for now and getting a few more local gigs.
If you could perform with anyone, who would it be?
Oh wow.. Well, I am in love with Flume.. Flume!
What is one quirky thing we don’t know about you?
A few friends know I like to try my acting skills out day to day. Pretending to be other people as I go about my daily tasks. Yesterday I was Justin Bieber! Haha
What does being a woman mean to you?
Being able to have dreams and fulfill them, following passions and being creative with little question or judgement. Gone are the days when woman were just expected to have kids and settle down, make house and cook dinner. I feel extremely lucky to be able to do what I do!
