Sarah from Rant Clothing

Established in May of 2003, Rant is an Australian brand which has been in existence for 9 years. Created by Sarah Garrett-Hodoniczky and Jason Hodoniczky, Rant focuses on using natural fibres and bringing sustainability to the company with unique, innovative fashion pieces. Rant has flourished in popularity over the past few years, with four current collections suited for everyday wear and the promise to keep you feeling soft and comfortable.

I am thrilled to announce that I had the opportunity to do an interview with Sarah from Rant, read on below to see how Sarah goes about her day and discover what her own personal favourite pieces of her gorgeous brand are –

Where do you get your inspiration?

Most of my collections are inspired by nature and the world around me at the time when I am creating that collection. The current winter collection is called ‘Harvest’ which was inspired by our weekly trips to the local organic market . I loved the way the types of produce changed as the weather did.

When I decide on a theme for a collection and then look for the fabrics, the right ones always come to me.

Can you describe a typical working day for you?

I start most days by taking a brisk walk into Brisbane Forest Park , to see all the birds waking up and getting on with their day. I then also do yoga before breakfast.

My husband Jay and I then discuss the day’s jobs over coffee before we go downstairs to to open up the studio for the day. The day is full of many things as we are very ‘hands on’ doing all the jobs ourselves with a few part time people coming in.

Today we are washing some of the styles for the upcoming collection ‘Colour Infusion’ . We wash some fabrics like Cotton and Viscose to preshrink and remove any dressing that is still on the fabric from the dyeing etc. This way the garments are ready to wear when you buy them and the customer knows what length and shape it will be after it is washed.

After they dry, we quality check the garment before tagging it and dividing them up to put aside till August when they are shipped to the stores.

Today I am also cutting samples and making patterns for the winter 2013 collection. The photo shoot is early July, so not much time to get over 100 samples made. I sew around half of the range samples myself so i can get a feel for the style. Some times I redesign it as I go. I then wear test almost all the collection so I know it is comfortable to wear .

I also get to chat each day to the stores or buyers when they call. I get to find out what is selling the best and what they are after. The other daily calls are from fabric suppliers, as we always have fabrics being made and dyed for us.

Mix all of this together . . and that is a typical day at Rant.

What are your favourite colours to work with and why?

Black , charcoal and ink . I just love dark colours but know that it’s not for everyone, so I have introduced lots of new colours in the ‘Colour Infusion’ collection for this Spring/Summer.

The new colours are , caper, olive , red and purple. I find that colours have an emotional effect on people and when they wear their fav colour you can see it .

What are your most popular items?

Our range of Australian made bamboo jersey essentials which are called ‘Epidermal Layers’

They are soft layers that you put on each day to make a complete outfit or as a base to add to. The colder it is, the more layers you will need. As the day warms up, you can take off some rather than being stuck in an outfit that was cosy first thing in the morning but sweltering by lunchtime.

The most popular shapes are , the Greta singlet (which comes in a top , tunic , slip and dress length the Eva tee which is a great fit as it has a centre back seam to take out the excess fabric at the waist but still have room over the hips, and the Thea skirt , which most people who buy one colour of this skirt, come back for more.

What is your personal favourite piece from the range?

I love the Benita leggings. I have worn them over and over for years now. They are a loose style of legging , like a knit pant rather than tights . I wear them with dresses & tunics , tucked into boots, with sandals , going out at night , doing yoga…

Also the Lorelei cardi , with it’s cute buttons and long sleeves.

What does the future hold for Rant Clothing?

I would like to be able to spread the joy of our clothes to more women. I love how women get excited when they find us and start to wear our garments, and then want more days each week to be wearing Rant .

Beauty and Lace says thank you to Sarah for allowing us the time to complete this. Stay tuned for a near-future piece on Rant’s Epidermal Collection along with my own experience on wearing some of the classic pieces.
