What do you think of when you think of pearls?
If you’re like most people, you think of housewives in the 1950s, Jackie Onassis…or your grandmother.
If you’re a keen observer, you’ll no doubt notice that none of those people are men. Well, of course, you are saying to yourself. Pearls are only for women! Right? Wrong.
Throughout history, men of a certain stature have always worn jewels, precious stones, and other adornments as an indication of their wealth. In many cases, this included pearls.
Somewhere along the line, however, pearls became fashionable for women and were popularized by iconic figures like Jackie Onassis. Since then, women everywhere have embraced the classic, simple elegance that only pearls can offer.
Fast-forward to 2017. Today, pearls are no longer just considered fashionable for women. These days, it’s becoming more and more acceptable, and even fashionable, for men to wear pearls, too.
That’s not to say that you’ll find too many men donning a classic strand of pearls at his nape, but more and more designers are including pearl details in their pieces for men in today’s collections. These days, there are so many options for pearl accessories with a masculine edge.
Take cufflinks for example. Cufflinks are the mark of a well-dressed, elegant man. They tell the world that he cares about his appearance, and that the little details of a look matter to him, If a man can wear diamond cufflinks, why can’t he wear pearl cufflinks?
A classic pair of cufflinks inlaid with pearl can be an elegant gift for any man, whether it’s a groom on his wedding day, your son for graduation, or simply to show that special someone you care. Another option is a pearl tie tack. This is the perfect way to punctuate his favourite tie with a little bit of understated, unexpected elegance.
If your man’s style runs a bit more toward the edgy side, he may like to wear a leather bracelet or necklace with pearl accents. The pairing of edgy materials like leather takes something that is traditionally worn by women – like pearls! – and transforms them into something perfectly suited to the men in your life.
Men rarely wear pearls, but you know what they say about rules: they are made to be broken. If you can’t picture yourself wearing the classic white pearls, why not look at some pieces that are made with black pearls? These dark and mysterious treasures can turn a piece of jewellery into something masculine yet beautiful, mysterious and stunning all at once.
Whether your man’s style is classic (aka James Bond) or more edgy (think rock star) there’s a beautiful-yet-manly pearl-accented piece out there that will perfectly suit his style.
Fashion has no rules. Remember that! There’s absolutely no reason a man can’t wear pearls and rock them!
