Interview: Kiyomi Vella

Kiyomi Vella was a 2013 contestant on The Voice who has gone on to embrace the lessons she learned on the show and bring her talent to a wider audience. This is what we recently learned about the young lady.

Hi Kiyomi, welcome to Beauty and Lace

What inspired you to become a musician?

I have always been a creative person, writing poems and drawing pictures when I was younger so when I took up singing it was another creative outlet for me. My inspiration for being a performer is to be a bigger version of myself on stage.

How was the auditions process for The Voice and how did you feel when you made it into the Top 24?

I had an amazing experience on The Voice Australia 2013, just getting through the blind audition process was huge for me. Moving through each round boosted my confidence, I learnt so many things and had so much fun. I was so nervous and so excited at the same time!

Can you tell us a little about your experiences on the show?

It was incredible just to be in that environment, working with the best of the best and learning from everyone. Everyone on the show really embraced my music and fashion style so I felt really comfortable being myself. Working with Joel Madden was so cool, he’s a really great guy and he was so supportive of what I do.

How would you describe your sound?

I think my sound has some different flavours in it, I sing songs that I really love and that create a spark of excitement in me. Emotional songs, fun songs, pop songs. I like hearing new and different sounds in pop music, so that’s what I go for when I write my own music.

Can you tell us a little about your songwriting inspirations?

I get inspiration from many things. Sometimes an idea will just pop into my head, I’ll play some chords on the piano and a song will appear or even walking down the street or sitting at a café I’ll hear something someone says, it sticks and a song idea will grow from it.

You are currently writing and recording your next EP, can you tell us a little about it?

I am currently working on some music, I’m song writing and working with different people to try and find the right songs. Can’t wait to get it out there!

You are an ambassador for Bright Pink Lipstick Day, can you tell us a little about the event and how you came to be involved with Pink Hope and this event?

I’m very proud to be an ambassador for Pink Hope, and they recently had a an event called Bright Pink Lipstick Day (20th September) where people can share pictures of their pink pouty lips on social media to spread the word for the charity. There was even a limited edition Pink Hope shade of lipstick by Revlon for people to go and buy for the day. It was a fantastic day full of fun and stories from inspirational women. Hopefully lots of money was raised for the charity that supports women with genetic breast and ovarian cancer.

I believe you are also exploring fashion and modeling, can you share a little about that with us?

I love to dress up so I have been exploring the world of modeling and fashion and I am having a ball. I love outfits with beautiful patterns, colours and shapes so I’m a big fan of Alice McCall and Romance Was Born. I love gold jewelery and bold accessories so I like to wear Mimco and the shoes are so gorgeous and comfortable!

So with all of this going on are you still also studying? How do you manage to juggle it all?

I am currently deferred in my Environmental Engineering degree, so I am taking a break from uni so I can work really hard on my music.

What does being a woman mean to you?

Being a woman is great! A day with the girls always makes me happy.

Wow, what a schedule. Good luck with everything Kiyomi.
