With the Great Recession still just a few years behind us, the notion of a worth-it education is more relevant than ever. It’s still important to get a good education in a field that you are interested in. For one, you’ll be able to make money. For two, you’ll be doing something that is important to you. In general, you can go one of two ways to achieving these things. The STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are getting a lot of press right now, and for good reason. These fields are highly competitive and expensive to get training within. But if you can pull it off, you can have a well-compensated and important career doing work that matters to the development of the world.
But if you aren’t into that, trade and vocational schools are achieving renewed importance in our societies. It used to be that most people went to trade school if they went to school at all. But the rise of the middle class made a college education the sign of having “arrived”.
