Today I have a review for our Adelaide readers, as I was lucky enough to pay a visit to award winning salon – Kinky Curly Straight. This popular salon is based in Stepney (123a Magill Road) and has onsite parking available at the rear.
Being a bit spoiled (OK, a lot), the doors opened for me on a Monday when they are normally closed so I could try the Keratin Smoothing Treatment. Uros and Mojca Mikic are the owners of the salon and Uros was my hairdresser for the day. Two of the friendliest people you will ever meet, I have been to hairdressers that barely smile, but Uros made me feel comfortable and had me laughing almost instantly.

The salon itself is almost worth a visit just for the decor. The luxurious design is complete with Hollywood icons on the walls and vintage furniture. Everything from the mirrors to the front desk were put together with a theme in mind and you cannot help to feel like a celebrity when you walk in its doors.
This is a green salon and I was amazed by the use of their eco-friendly disposable towels, yes you heard me – disposable towels! You can read more about the different ways that Kinky Curly Straight cares for the environment here.
My hair prior to the treatment was long dry, frizzy and damaged from going blonde. My hair has always been a constant battle for me which is part of the reason I started this website – it’s naturally brown and curly, but in my mind it really should be blonde and straight!
The treatment took around three hours and they use the Alfaparf Lisse Design system which is formaldehyde free and the scent is barely noticeable and not unpleasant. If you would like to learn all the specifics about the Smoothing Treatment, you can read a Q&A we featured here.
The product is applied and sealed with a straightener at a temperature that is suitable for your hair. After the treatment was completed and washed out my hair was unrecognisable. Softer, stronger, smoother and styling time dramatically reduced.
The next day I got caught in the rain, and automatically covered my hair in an attempt to avoid the frizzies – I didn’t have to because it got wet…and didn’t frizz or curl. I wasn’t truly convinced until I got home and washed my hair and let it air dry – and it dried straight!
The treatment is quite technical to perfect so it is important it is done by an experienced hairdresser. The end results are truly worth it and will last for up to four months. While dead straight hair isn’t guaranteed, mine is certainly almost straight and much more manageable. This would be ideal for those traveling overseas who don’t want the hassle of high maintenance hair and good holiday photos!
Prices for this treatment start at $250 and the money you will save from blowdrys and the stress of day to day styling is definitely worth it. The salon provides a whole range of services and are up to date with current trends.
I could not fault the experience that I had, the salon was beautiful, the owners were friendly and welcoming, talented and knowledgeable and the treatment…maybe have just changed my life.
