The Most Common Plastic Surgery Procedures

Plastic surgery is on the rise and there are some procedures which will always be at the top end of the list, the first things you think of when plastic surgery is mentioned, but there are also some procedures becoming more popular that I never would have even considered. I think of cosmetic surgery when I think plastic surgery but the field is so much more than that, it is also reconstructive surgery and microsurgery. Sydney plastic surgeon Dr Vlad Milovic chose to specialise in the field after a 14 hour microsurgical procedure that was far from elective.

The reasons people go under the knife are almost as varied as the procedures on offer so we have compiled a list of some of the most popular procedures searched for in Australia, and I’ve included one I hadn’t even considered that I have seen crop up a couple of times recently.

It is extremely important to do your research before making any big decisions about going under the knife. These procedures will change your life and if you don’t do your homework they could well become regrets that are with you for life. Make sure you meet your surgeon and ask questions, find out all you can about what is involved so that you can make a proper informed decision and don’t let price be the deciding factor.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation mammoplasty, often referred to as the boob job, is the increase of breast size by surgically inserting implants. This is one of the most common and popular procedures worldwide.

There are three types of breast augmentation performed in Australia. The primary augmentation to alter the size, form and feel of the breasts; the revision augmentation which corrects a previous augmentation and a primary reconstruction to replace breast tissue damaged by disease or trauma.

Surgery will take about an hour and is usually performed on an outpatient basis.

Rhinoplasty

Commonly known as nose surgery this procedure reshapes the nose by changing the width of the bridge, position of the nostrils and the tip. This is often done to achieve a more pleasing shape by people with asymmetrical noses, it can also be to correct breathing problems because of the structure of the nose or sporting injuries.

Surgery takes between 1-3 hours and is often on an outpatient basis.

Liposuction

This procedure has always been very popular and is also known as liposculpture. Liposuction can be used to remove large amounts of unwanted fat but it is better used to shift the smaller amounts that refuse to move with diet and exercise. It can be quite a complementary procedure to a tummy tuck or breast procedure and is popular with both genders.

Surgery time will depend on the area being treated and is usually performed as day surgery.

Abdominoplasty

Commonly referred to as the Tummy Tuck this procedure removes excess skin and fat as well as tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. Popular with women after childbirth and significant weight loss because it reduces the excess skin as well as removing fat. A tummy tuck can also reduce stretch marks. As appealing as all of these benefits sound please don’t regard it as a means of weight loss. It would make a fantastic final step in the journey to your new body, or possibly back to your pre-baby body, but not the only step.

Surgery often takes 1-3 hours and an overnight stay is common.

Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery removes excess skin, fat and muscle from the upper and lower eyelid. The main reasons for eyelid surgery include wanting to look younger and less tired but sometimes the procedure becomes necessary because the skin of the upper eyelid droops over the eyes and impairs vision.

Surgery often takes 1-2 hours depending on the complexity of the work and is performed as day surgery.

Otoplasty

Ear Correction surgery is used to correct deformities of the outer ear and is often performed on children as young as 5. The two most common procedures either bring the ears closer to the head (known as ear pinning) or reduce the size of the ears by reconstruction.

Surgery usually takes about an hour and is performed as an outpatient.

The increase in popularity of cosmetic plastic surgery, and the social acceptability of genital surgery in recent years has seen a rise in the number of labiaplasty procedures performed. This is a procedure I had never heard of until this week, and I have now come across it multiple times so thought I would include it here.

Labiaplasty

Surgery performed on the external parts of the female genitalia is called labiaplasty and reduces the size and shape of either the inner lips of the vagina (labia minora) or the outer lips (labia majora). This procedure can be a medical necessity for women with large or oddly shaped labia because of pain and discomfort during intercourse and in the course of everyday life. Some women are born with large labia, others find they grow with childbirth, age or weight gain. Some women are not pleased with the look of their genitals and want them changed while some feel that they will have more pleasure after the procedure.

Surgery takes 1-2 hours and is done on an outpatient basis.

Every surgery will be different, times used here are a rough guide and will depend on the extent of work required.

There are many reasons to consider plastic surgery and every area of the body can be worked on. If this is something that you are considering please be sure to check the credentials of your surgeon and consider the risks carefully.
