Bestselling self-published author Jamie McGuire has recently scored a global two book deal with Simon & Schuster, negotiated by Atria editor Amy Tanenbaum with Rebecca Watson of Valerie Hoskins Associates Ltd. If that agency seems to be familiar it could be because of all the recent publicity surrounding Fifty Shades of Grey, yes this is the agency that represents author EL James. The deal negotiated by Tannenbaum and Watson is for World English rights and audio after a heated bidding war.
The first book covered by the deal is Beautiful Distaster due for an immediate e-book release and a paperback edition to be released in August. May 2011 saw the original self-published e-book release followed by a self-published trade paperback in October 2011. The book has been making steady progress on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists, the Times recently had it in the number 9 spot. The UK see it in the paid for Kindle chart at 46 and 21 in the iBookstore chart. 200,000 copies of the e-book have already been sold in the US, foreign rights have been licensed in ten countries and there are more deals pending.
Lou Johnston, Managing Director of Simon & Schuster Australia is excited to be part of the publishing team delivering Jamie McGuire’s books to a global audience.
“It’s always exciting to work on books that have an established fanbase and are generating a real buzz out there,” said Johnson.
“The Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon has cemented what we’ve known all along: that a reader’s passion has the power to move mountains, whether that’s in the physical or online space. We can’t wait to connect even more readers to this addictive read.”
Beautiful Disaster is the story of Abby Abernathy, escapee of a painful past and ready to play it safe until she finds herself torn between two men, two very different men. A book filled with passion, romance and unexpected twists.
The follow-up novel is highly anticipated and continues the story from a new perspective, Walking Disaster is scheduled for global publication in 2013.
