Tania McCartney

We were lucky enough to have Tania over for a visit on her virtual tour for the launch of Beijing Tai Tai and now she’s taking us to her place for a little look around her creative space.

Come let’s see what she surrounds herself when it’s writing time.

What is on your desk?

Books, books, books and books, illustrator sketches and book mock-ups. Usually a cup of coffee, a bottle of water and Aesop facial spray. Oftentimes flowers because they’re so uplifting. I also have my diary, business cards and camera almost permanently on my desk, along with mementoes and photos that mean a lot to me.

What shouldn’t be on your desk?

So much work! Bills. Sugar.

Why does this area motivate you?

It’s light filled. It’s surrounded by books and items that bring back fond memories.

Are there any items of particular significance?

Photos of loved ones, mementoes from my travels and drawings by my kids have the most significance to me. I also keep a Riley doll (from my Riley the Little Aviator picture book series) made by a dear friend, and letters and cards from precious people . . . I currently have a letter from the Governor General saying how much she loves my Riley books, as well as cards from my best friends wishing me luck with my latest book launch. All of these things put me in the mood to write!

How often do you spend in this workspace each day?

I sit in this chair at 8am and I don’t leave it til 4pm when the kids get home from school. That’s pretty much 5 days a week, then time on weekends and in the evening, too. Forget writer’s block, I have writer’s spread!
